In 2002, Potters Resorts Hopton-on-Sea received the UK’s first 5-Star Holiday Village Award, making 2026 a very special year.
Since receiving the 5-Star Award from the English Tourist Board, it has become a defining part of who we are. Now proudly upheld by VisitEngland, it’s a standard to which we hold ourselves. And one we work tirelessly to deliver, day in and day out.
And we’re delighted to say that Potters Resorts Hopton-on-Sea in Norfolk has, in addition to Five Lakes’ great news this week, retained this rare accolade in our industry.

Achieving the 5-Star Award is not simply about first impressions or standout facilities. It’s about consistency, attention to detail, and an unwavering commitment to excellence across every part of your experience.
From the quality and cleanliness of accommodation, to the range of activities on offer, to the professionalism, warmth and attentiveness of our team, every element is carefully assessed against the highest national standards.
But perhaps most importantly, retaining five stars year after year requires continual investment and development. Guest expectations change, and so do we.

Whether it’s enhancing facilities, expanding our programme or fully inclusive offering, introducing new activities, or improving your theatre experience, we are always looking for ways to evolve.
And it’s this mindset of never standing still that has allowed us to maintain five stars for an incredible 25th consecutive year at Potters Resorts Hopton-on-Sea in Norfolk.

Of course, awards and accolades are important, but they only reflect what truly defines five-star at Potters. That feeling our guests experience from the moment they arrive. The camaraderie, the sense of belonging, and the confidence that everything has been thoughtfully taken care of.
Back in 2002…
Potters Leisure Resort (as it was known then) was celebrating something completely groundbreaking: The UK’s very first 5-Star Holiday Village Award from the English Tourist Board.
It was an award accepted by the late Brian Potter, who would receive an MBE ten years later for his services to the leisure industry.

Things looked a little different back then. The hotel at Hopton-on-Sea had only recently been completed, marking a new era for the business. Less than a decade earlier, the last of the old wooden huts had been dramatically blown up live on ITV’s Anglia News. It was a moment that symbolised the transformation of the resort into something entirely new.

Potters was still closed for a few weeks each year, and yet even then, the foundations of today’s experience were firmly in place. Familiar faces like Mark Brewer and Buzby Allen were already part of the furniture, each with over 15 years at Potters under their belt.
Bookings were still made via post, with a form in every brochure. The Reservations Team had only just moved from handwritten boards behind Reception to a new high-tech computer system.
But as you’ll see in our 2002 brochure, the list of inclusive activities was as long as ever!
There was the birth of a certain Harry Potter — son of John and Celia, born in Norwich. His namesake was seen in cinemas a few weeks later in Hogwarts’ Chamber of Secrets.
And earlier that year, Potters hosted its fourth World Indoor Bowls Championships in the recently built International Arena, as Hopton-on-Sea started to enjoy a growing reputation on the world stage.

Elsewhere in the UK in 2002
The nation came together to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of Elizabeth II, marking 50 years of Her Majesty’s reign. There were street parties, concerts and a real sense of community spirit across the country.

Sporting-wise, there was excitement surrounding the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester, which brought a feeling of pride to the UK. However, football fans will never forget the moment Ronaldinho lobbed David Seaman in the World Cup, to see off England’s ‘Golden Generation’.

On our TV screens, before the days of The X Factor and Britain’s Got Talent, the country was gripped by the very first series of Pop Idol. Will Young narrowly beat Gareth Gates in a nail-biting final that sparked conversation up and down the UK.

It was also a time before smartphones, social media, and instant sharing, when photos still needed to be developed. Or taken on digital cameras if you were lucky! Nights out and holidays were talked about long after they’d happened, rather than posted in real time. Instead of sharing online, moments spread through word of mouth, newspapers and TV highlights. It was a different kind of magic.
Looking to the future
Back then, the UK’s first 5-Star Award wasn’t just a badge of honour — it was a statement of intent. A promise to deliver something truly special in the world of UK holidays.
Fast forward to 2026, and so much has evolved, from facilities and entertainment to the addition of Five Lakes, which has also retained its five-star status for the fourth consecutive year.

So as we celebrate this incredible milestone, we do so with pride in our past and excitement for the future. Because if the last 25 years have shown us anything, it’s that at Potters Resorts, we never stand still. We just keep raising the bar.
"Scoring 96% in the assessment is outstanding. A huge congratulations to the team for their continued dedication towards giving every guest a 5-Star experience."
