Dan & Merve Gardner

Part of the Family

May 25, 2026

For generations of guests, Potters is more than a break away. It’s a place where traditions begin, where friends and families reconnect, and where memories are built so deeply into people’s lives that they become part of the family story itself.

Dan Gardner has been coming to Potters for almost a quarter of a century, but if you ask him what keeps bringing him back, the answer isn’t just the fun, the entertainment or the memories. It’s family.

From childhood holidays with his parents and grandparents, to proposing to his wife Merve beneath a sky of carefully arranged stars, and now welcoming baby Atlas into the world, Potters has quietly become the backdrop to some of the most important moments in Dan’s life.

And in many ways, that’s exactly what Potters has always been about.

Dan’s Potters journey started as a teenager growing up in Brentwood. His grandparents were keen bowlers and long-time Potters regulars, forever encouraging the rest of the family to give it a try.

“It took a little convincing,” Dan laughs. “But once we came for the first time, that was it. We never looked back.”

That first visit sparked a tradition that has lasted ever since, with the family returning at least once every year. And for Dan, those early memories are crystal clear.

“I remember coming as a youngster and Paul Reaney was running football coaching. He always used to sign my football shirts. He was like a hero to me every time we came,” he says. “But I also remember not being old enough to play in the staff versus guests football matches!”

Like many children who grew up visiting Potters, Dan remembers the feeling of excitement that came with every trip — arriving at the resort, recognising familiar faces, those faces recognising him, and knowing a week of laughter and togetherness was about to begin.

Over the years, those visits evolved. Childhood holidays became adult escapes. Family time turned into friendship traditions. But the feeling stayed the same.

Now 36 and living in Frinton-on-Sea, Dan still sees Potters as a constant in life — a place that has grown alongside him through every chapter. Then came perhaps the biggest chapter of all.

In 2023, Dan whimsically signed up to Hinge — a leading match-making app — and it turned out to be one of the best decisions he ever made. “Merve was my first and only match,” he says with a smile.

And from there, things moved quickly. “When you know, you know. Everything just went flying by.”

By April 2024, Dan knew he wanted to propose. He had several ideas in mind for where it might happen, but their first Potters break together was fast approaching. And nowhere else felt quite right.

What followed was a proposal carefully crafted with the help of the Potters team, proving once again how the people behind the scenes often become part of guests’ stories too.

“I called the team and got a call back from Zac (Patterson from Entertainment),” Dan explains. “When we arrived, I snuck away to meet Michael (Johnson from Tech Crew) and we set everything up.

“There were stars in the room, the music I wanted, pictures on the screens. It was amazing.”

For Dan, it was the perfect setting. A place already filled with years of memories became the setting for a brand-new future. And for Merve, Potters quickly became special too.

Of Turkish descent and someone who loves to celebrate, she immediately connected with the lively atmosphere, entertainment and sense of occasion that makes every Potters break feel unique.

“She loves a party,” Dan says. “And she definitely found one at Potters!”

It wasn’t just the entertainment or atmosphere that won her over though. Like so many first-time guests, Merve discovered something difficult to describe until you experience it yourself. The warmth.

There’s a reason families return generation after generation, a reason guests often know team members by name. There’s a reason people celebrate anniversaries, birthdays, reunions and milestones here year after year. Potters becomes familiar. Comfortable. Part of life.

And sometimes, the smallest moments become the most meaningful later on. Because, shortly after the proposal, Dan and Merve posed for a photograph outside The Atlas Theatre, taken by a member of the security team. At the time, it was simply a lovely memory from a special weekend. But life had another surprise waiting.

In April 2026, the couple welcomed their first child into the world — a baby boy. And there was only one name they ever wanted.

Atlas. The theatre that unknowingly framed one of their happiest photographs had inspired the name of their son.

“The name just felt so right,” Dan says. “It’s where a fresh chapter of our story started.”

Now one month old, baby Atlas is settling into the world while Dan and Merve adjust to life as new parents. It’s another new chapter. Another milestone. Another memory in Dan’s story that, in many ways, has unfolded hand-in-hand with Potters across the years.

And while their first family holiday with baby Atlas is already being discussed, Dan’s next visit is set to be another meaningful one.

“I’m taking my dad for a round of golf at Five Lakes,” he says. “It’ll be our first 18 holes together. And there’s no better place to do it than Potters.”

That sentence perhaps captures the heart of Potters Resorts better than anything else. Because while facilities evolve, entertainment changes and new experiences are introduced every year, the real magic has always been in the moments shared between people.

Grandparents introducing their family to a resort they loved. A teenager meeting his sporting heroes. A couple beginning their future together beneath a sky of stars. A baby carrying the name of a place already woven into family history.

For some guests, Potters is where annual traditions begin. For others, it’s where friendships grow, where families reconnect, or where life’s biggest moments unexpectedly unfold.

And for Dan Gardner, Potters has become something truly special — not just somewhere he visits, but somewhere woven into the story of his life itself.
