A celebration of the legends behind some of the greatest stage shows

Some songs never leave us. They become part of our lives, the soundtrack to celebrations, memories and milestones. When those timeless hits make the leap from the charts to the stage, they take on a whole new life, introducing legendary artists to new generations while giving long-time fans another reason to fall in love all over again.

That irresistible combination lies at the heart of Potters Theatre Company’s latest production, Musical Icons.

Launched this week at Hopton-on-Sea and next week at Five Lakes, it’s a vibrant celebration of the world’s greatest artists whose music has inspired some of the West End and Broadway’s most successful shows.

"Wow. Musical Icons is an absolutely brilliant show."

Setting the tone

From the very first note, the audience is swept into an evening packed with nostalgia, energy and unmistakable hits. Opening with an explosion of Motown classics, the PTC immediately sets the tone with Can’t Help My Self, Ain’t Too Proud to Beg, Baby I Need Your Loving, Dancing in the Street, and more.

The infectious harmonies, slick choreography and vibrant costumes perfectly capture the golden age of soul, transporting the audience back to Detroit’s legendary recording studios.

The journey continues into the songbook of Carole King, where heartfelt storytelling replaces high-energy dance for a few magical moments. Will You Love Me Tomorrow, Up On the Roof, and The Loco-Motion showcase the PTC’s versatility, allowing the stunning vocal performances to shine before seamlessly moving into another musical phenomenon.

No celebration of jukebox musicals would be complete without Jersey Boys. Instantly recognisable favourites including Can’t Take My Eyes Off You and December 1963 (Oh, What a Night) remind audiences exactly why the music of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons continues to captivate in theatres worldwide. The close harmonies, sharp staging and charismatic performances make this section an undeniable crowd-pleaser.

Pop Magic

As one of pop’s greatest success stories, the unmistakable sound of ABBA soon fills the theatre. Hits such as Mamma Mia, Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight) and The Winner Takes It All capture everything audiences adore about this famous foursome, who to this day remain a global phenomenon.

It’s impossible not to smile as dazzling costumes, sparkling lighting and energetic choreography transform the stage into a celebration of Swedish pop perfection.

"Another fabulous new show."

From disco to dancefloors, Bee Gees always had us covered. Night Fever, You Should Be Dancing, How Deep Is Your Love, and so many more have created a memorable party atmosphere courtesy of the Gibb brothers, complete with vibrant visuals and precision choreography that keeps the energy soaring.

Latin rhythms take centre stage too, as the music of Gloria Estefan injects another burst of colour into the production. Dr. Beat, Rhythm Is Gonna Get You and 1, 2, 3 to name a few, bring an almost carnival-like spirit that the audience loved.

The 80s theme continues with powerhouse performances inspired by two vocal legends. Tina Turner’s unmistakable grit and energy shine through with Nutbush City Limits and the iconic Proud Mary, while the emotion and brilliance of Whitney Houston provide one of the evening’s standout moments — a soaring rendition of I Will Always Love You.

Brit Invasion

A whirlwind tour through British pop history follows, beginning with the music of Take That and hits such as Could It Be Magic, Relight My Fire, and the heartfelt Never Forget. The section provides yet more opportunity for the company to blend outstanding vocals with polished ensemble work, reminding audiences why these songs have remained favourites for decades.

"It was absolutely outstanding!"

A complete change of pace inspired by the cheeky charm of Madness injects humour and character into the evening. House of Fun and Baggy Trousers are accompanied by playful staging and choreography that perfectly capture the band’s unmistakable personality.

And as the evening builds to an unforgettable finale, Meat Loaf’s theatrical classics Bat Out of Hell, Dead Ringer for Love and It’s All Coming Back to Me Now showcase the dramatic flair of the cast, before one final musical giant takes centre stage.

Guests who’ve seen Simply the Best in recent months will no doubt have enjoyed its high energy tribute to Queen, minus one of their biggest hits. So, as the opening chords of Bohemian Rhapsody ring out to close Musical Icons, it’s clear the audience has reached the climax of an extraordinary journey.

Queen’s legendary masterpiece provides a fitting conclusion, bringing together every element that Potters Theatre Company is renowned for, leaving the audience from opening night on their feet in applause.

PTC’s Latest Masterpiece

Of course, Musical Icons is about much more than the songs themselves. Every production from the Potters Theatre Company is renowned for its outstanding production values, and this latest show is no exception.

Stunning digital screens transport audiences effortlessly from one musical world to the next, while spectacular lighting, beautifully designed costumes and seamless technical precision ensure every transition feels fresh and exciting. Add the company’s trademark high-energy choreography alongside a slice of humour from familiar faces, and the result is a production that feels polished, contemporary and thoroughly entertaining from beginning to end.

Perhaps the greatest achievement of Musical Icons is the way it celebrates not just the musicals, but the extraordinary artists whose music continues to inspire audiences across generations. Whether you grew up with Motown, danced to ABBA, sang along with Queen or discovered these legendary songs through the stage productions they inspired, this show reminds us exactly why great music never goes out of style.

Musical Icons will appear on all 3-Night and 4-Night Breaks at Hopton-on-Sea and Five Lakes (launching Wednesday, 9th September).
